Fertility clinic woman’s baby joy
A woman who works at a Notts fertility clinic but had been told she might never have her own child is celebrating the birth of her daughter.
Kathryn Berrisford works in the CARE Fertility Centre at the Park hospital - but had suffered four miscarriages.
Doctors only recently discovered that her immune system had been rejecting the baby in her womb.
After pioneering immune therapy the 33-year-old from Whatstandwell, Derbys, gave birth to baby Mae two weeks ago. Tests revealed that Mrs Berrisford and her husband both carried similar antigens in their blood.
For this reason, her body was not producing the blocking antibodies to provide a protective blanket around the embryo and prevent the baby from being rejected. Her immune system was not working properly so each time she became pregnant the baby miscarried.
She was treated with her husband’s white blood cells to stimulate her own immune system. She said: “You make yourself believe at first that it’s just one of those things. As you get further along you start to realise that it’s a serious problem and you start to think that maybe you are not going to have a child of your own. I tried to be professional at work but I had a great empathy for all the couples that were coming through and it was hard not to get too emotional.”
She added: “Mae is the best thing that ever happened to me.”
